Back Home

Woo, back in Scholes for Christmas!

And I’m already full… We had a Thai takeaway for tea when we got back — my parents had just driven up from Norfolk this morning, and after taking three hours to get me back home, it was a lot easier! They always give us far too much, we even considered getting the set meal for two (it’d still be enough for the three of us).

After food came the next most important thing — setting up the computer! Now my parents have the laptop, there’s no need for a desktop upstairs, so I’ve just moved over the peripherals to my machine. The one exception was the screen — there’s no going back from TFT, I’m afraid!

So what’s next? Looks like it’s going to be a few drinks with some bona fide Yorkshire folk!

Microsoft vs Apple Advertising

With the launch of Windows Vista looming, Microsoft have released a viral marketing campaign featuring Demetri Martin, called Clearification. The hiring of an American comedian to advertise their product was matched by Apple, who hired Demitri’s The Daily Show co-correspondent John Hodgman — alongside Justin Long — for their “Get a Mac” campaign.

Both are really funny; I don’t like Microsoft as a corporation, and I don’t like the Mac OS, but I can cast these feelings aside for the comedy!

Firefox 2.0

I have just installed and started playing with Firefox 2.0. I’m afraid to say that the first thing I did is install the Winestripe theme, which is essentially the FF1.5 default theme — I wasn’t impressed with the 2.0 default!

Looks aside, the rest of the changes seem about right — they finally got round to including a search engine manager as standard, and the previewing of web feeds works rather nicely — though I did just finish writing the XSL for my news feed! Bah…

Hopefully we can go climbing outside tomorrow, though I’m not sure we have enough kit. The shoes alone might be an issue…

Back Up & Running

It now seems that the server is back up and running rather well.

I still can’t believe, after so many times, that I haven’t learned to back up SQL tables! Still, nothing can be done… I’m just glad that the website itself wasn’t lost!

Hopefully everything on the Scholes MAFIA and CMBuckley networks should slowly return to normal. The Pictures site will be getting a major improvement from the admin side — and users of Facebook (you procrastinators, you) should notice a few similarities too!

Right, bed time…
