Delicatessen & Digressions

4 March 2008

It was late on in the morning (ooh, at least 11). The conversation had wandered. It’s taken me a few minutes sitting here to try and piece together the conversation again, but I think we started talking about Dave’s foot noir (his ingenious idea at James’ leaving do) where he kicks a football around a fog-drenched pitch, lamenting James’ absence. We then tried to think of a suitable score for the film, and I came up with Yann Tiersen’s “Comptine d’un autre été: L’après-midi”, an apt lament. I’d only seen it in Aidan GibbonsThe Piano (YouTube), but apparently it’s from the Amélie soundtrack. So from Amélie, via Jean-Pierre Jeunet, we get to Delicatessen. A vision of dystopian France meant I just had to bring up District 13, then parkour and Casino Royale, but I digress.

Anyway, Emma lent me Delicatessen, and I watched it this evening. So many little things caught my eye that I couldn’t turn away for one moment! For those who haven’t seen it, I won’t say much, but suffice it to say that an underground gang of vegetarian rebels is an interesting film concept…

Oh, and I know that this post is around 75% digression, but I must add that for some reason Dominique Pinon reminds me of a certain misunderstood individual

We are all friends
No matter when
No matter where
No matter how dangerous the way
No matter how far the way that we are yearning towards.
But we all know
No matter where we are
We have our own companion now.
And we can get everywhere no matter how far it is.
Because we have our own bright future
As long as we still have dreams.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me…

Helen, Caroline and I went to see the third film this evening. If you didn’t like either of the first two, don’t go see this one. Mind you, that’s because you’re a lost cause; they were both excellent, and this one was a great finish to the trilogy!

Convoluted? Difficult to follow? Pah. If you know the characters well enough, then the complexity only makes the film better. There’s not as much comedy in this as there was in the previous two, but it had its moments: from the recoil of Marty’s gun to Jack’s miniature pirate ship, this film is everything I could have wanted!

I want to be a pirate!

Spider-Man 3

12 May 2007

We went to see Spider-Man 3 for Jay’s birthday today. I’ve seen the second, and really enjoyed it. This one, I must admit, was no different — despite warnings from critics and friends alike that “there’s too much going on.”

America! Fuck yeah! One thing, though — I’m sure it’s tongue-in-cheek, or at least I hope it is — but I did find it rather daft that when ol’ Spidey wins back the public, there’s a huge American flag? I’ve read that the same thing was done in a more subtle way in the first film, and apparently so much more so in the second that I don’t remember it. But was that necessary? Come on!

In addition, the symbiote seems to turn him in to Gerard Way. Anyone else notice that? Oh, apparently they did.

Casino Royale & Planet of Sound

A very different Bond…

The film was good, don’t get me wrong. It features many “in” things like parkour (indeed, it features Sebastien Foucan himself) and Texas hold ’em, and is full of product placements for Sony — predictable, as they bought MGM — but it still sees a return to old Bond, before all the gadgetry. It’s usually the gadgetry that I enjoy so much, so I was glad that it wasn’t too antiquated… In fact, I was very much impressed with the silenced UMP9 at the end of the film! Don’t think I’ll put it on my Christmas list, though…

After the film we went to Planet of Sound at the DSU, something we haven’t done for a while! We had a couple of games of pool, featuring me losing by going in-off when potting black, and then Aimee and I dominated for a short while on table-football table!

I have to say that PoS was better than I remember it!
