First Ever DUFMS Flash Mob

26 November 2006

Today, we had the first flash mob in Market Square. The mission: everyone had to freeze for two minutes when the cathedral bells rang 2pm.

I have mixed feelings about how well this worked: On one hand, it grabbed a number of people’s attention, including (but not limited to) a kid behind me who I heard say, “Mam, everybody’s stopped moving…” On the other hand, Market Square on a market day is often full of people standing around, and I half feel we didn’t do it justice.

It was captured on film, but unfortunately the scheduled cameraman somehow broke his camera before the event! My suggestion for the next flash mob was somewhere like outside the library, which has great opportunities for elevated filming. But hey! Still a good thing to be a part of — and I even get in the video, albeit as everyone’s walking off!

Casino Royale & Planet of Sound

26 November 2006

A very different Bond…

The film was good, don’t get me wrong. It features many “in” things like parkour (indeed, it features Sebastien Foucan himself) and Texas hold ’em, and is full of product placements for Sony — predictable, as they bought MGM — but it still sees a return to old Bond, before all the gadgetry. It’s usually the gadgetry that I enjoy so much, so I was glad that it wasn’t too antiquated… In fact, I was very much impressed with the silenced UMP9 at the end of the film! Don’t think I’ll put it on my Christmas list, though…

After the film we went to Planet of Sound at the DSU, something we haven’t done for a while! We had a couple of games of pool, featuring me losing by going in-off when potting black, and then Aimee and I dominated for a short while on table-football table!

I have to say that PoS was better than I remember it!

Less Than Jake + Dropkick Murphys + The Living End + Billy No Mates

Awesome!

I was originally planning not to go, but when Reg popped round and said he had a spare ticket for £17.50, I thought: “why not?” At this time I had no idea who were supporting, so you can imagine how good it felt to find out that The Living End and Dropkick Murphys were two of the warm-up acts!

Both were amazing, except TLE unfortunately didn’t play their cover of “Tainted Love” — ah well!

And then for Less Than Jake

When they played at Leeds Festival, they played a lot of stuff from their then-forthcoming album In With The Out Crowd, which I didn’t own. This time, however, they played mostly songs of a Losing Streak / Hello Rockview era, which was brilliant!

Aside from the music, it was great to catch up with Cait, who had been avoiding me, and Joe, who travelled all the way up from Manchester. His long journey back meant that he got back around 6am and had a 9 o’clock lecture. Oh dear!

Faith Restored in WLM

3 November 2006

I have re-installed Windows Live Messenger today, after attempting to get it working before and being a bit miffed. For one thing, the contact list seemed to have lost any control over showing display pictures as per MSN Messenger 7.5, and plugin control for Messenger Plus! Live was handled rather differently.

The second time round went better, but I still had to use A-Patch to remove the adverts and make a few other tweaks. That done, I started messing around with some scripting and discovered I’d lost the knack for anything but PHP…

However, my mood improved greatly when I found the button I had been looking for (it had been there all along, this is what happens when we don’t explore):

Before: no Display Pictures. Hey, it’s 3am, there’s usually more than 3 contacts online… Look over here! Innocuous button hides useful options! After: Woo — thumbnails! Plus it shows the personal message and email address of each user.

Seems I’m not the only one who found this information useful:

Jay’s New Memory Card

26 October 2006

Jay managed to get a Sony M2 memory card delivered next-day after getting bored of waiting for a month for Orange to deliver. It’s tiny!

The picture on their site gives no scale, so here’s a shot of it next to my finger:

New Sony product (left) poses problems for fat-fingered people (right)

I have to say, I was rather impressed!

This weekend is Old Boys’ Weekend at our college, so that means a load of people coming up, hopefully a few from last year, so we can catch up and see who’s got a job and who’s still sitting around looking…

Boarding Tryouts

20 October 2006

This evening was spent at the artificial ski slope at Silkworth Sports Complex in Sunderland. It was supposed to be tryouts for the DUSSC, but didn’t seem that organised: Upon arrival I purchased a membership card (for £5) that meant I got a discount — except that it only applied to skiers. Thankfully the staff also thought I was a skier and charged me the cheaper skiers’ price for entry! Reg managed to pay for both the membership card, only to then be told that he didn’t need it, but was going to have to pay full boarding price…

After getting my hired gear (all mine is at home and I’m lazy), We eventually ventured out onto the slope and had a couple of runs. My first runs were rather pathetic — the honeycomb surface actually seemed to give the board grip, rather than sliding smoothly! Once I finally got into it and had adjusted to a very strange posture that meant I stayed off the deck, I was told that I needed gloves to ride on the slope. No matter, they told me when I said I didn’t have any (another thing we weren’t told about), we have some spare in the hire centre. In fact it was a bin of about seven odd gloves, each a different size, and none matching. I ended up with a one-size-fits-most Magic Glove on one hand, and a kid’s goalie glove on the other. Great…

After only a few more runs, when to be fair I was feeling more comfortable on the surface, it was time to get back. I did very little, showed hardly anything to anyone, and yet still they ask everyone to turn up for the race there on Saturday…

The Automatic + Mumm-Ra + Alterkicks

13 October 2006

Last night we went over to Newcastle University Union to see The Automatic, supported by Mumm-Ra and Alterkicks. Liverpool-based band Alterkicks played an indie-ish (but not retro, oh no not retro) set to begin with, followed by Sussex boys Mumm-Ra and their eclectic pop/alternative rock mix. Having missed them at Leeds this year (due to sleeping in) I was glad to see them!

And finally to The Automatic, who did not disappoint with their blend of pop-punk, electronic and indie rock. If I ached from yesterday, then I don’t know how to describe this morning! Apparently I’m getting old!

Back to Newcastle this evening for Hannah’s party — in fact, must go make a CD…

Getting Paid to Blog

15 August 2006

I’m writing this from Hayes labelling machine. I have nothing better to do…

Yesterday, Olly, Helen and myself went to Xscape at Castleford with our two-hours-for-the-price-of-one tickets, only to find that students could get up to three hours for even less. Still, it was good to get the board back out of the cupboard and onto the snow. We still haven’t sorted out the freeriding lessons yet, but hopefully we will when Reg returns. I can’t wait for Val d’Isère now!

Have been much better on the bike since my last entry — but as yet I haven’t made it over the bollards at the old peoples’ homes!

Pub tonight — managed to sort it out for exactly the same day as the day I promised to fix my dad’s boss’ computer!
